Residential Electrical Services
Sonoma County housing spans well over a century — Victorian farmhouses from the 1890s, postwar tracts, planned-city subdivisions from the 1960s and 70s, wine country estates, and new construction on rebuilt fire lots. Each era brings its own electrical problems. After twenty years we have seen all of them, and we know which ones are urgent and which ones a homeowner has been talked into worrying about.
Electrical Panel Upgrades
An electrical panel upgrade replaces your home’s main service equipment — the panel, breakers, meter socket, and service conductors — with higher-capacity equipment, most commonly a change from 100-amp to 200-amp service. It is the most common job Bright Right Electric performs in Sonoma County, and it is the upgrade that makes nearly every other modern electrical addition possible.
Why So Many North Bay Homes Need One
A very large share of housing in Sonoma, Marin, and Napa County was built between 1950 and 1985. Those homes were wired for a range, a dryer, a water heater, and a television. They were not wired for an electric vehicle drawing 40 amps continuously, a heat pump, an induction cooktop, a heat pump water heater, a hot tub, and a home office running at the same time.
The symptoms are consistent. Breakers that trip under load. Lights that dim when the air conditioning or the dryer kicks on. A panel with no open slots and no room for another circuit. A main breaker that feels warm to the touch. Double-tapped breakers where someone crammed two circuits onto one, which is both a code violation and a common finding in homes where a previous owner added a circuit without a permit.
None of these are cosmetic complaints. They are a system telling you it has reached its limit.
Federal Pacific and Zinsco Panels
Two panel brands deserve specific mention because they are common in this region and because they are not simply outdated. They are defective by design.
Federal Pacific Electric Stab-Lok panels have a documented history of breakers that fail to trip during an overcurrent or short circuit. A breaker that does not trip is a breaker that does nothing at all, which means the protection you believe you have is not there. Federal Pacific panels were installed into the early 1980s, which places them squarely inside the era when most of Rohnert Park, Windsor, and the newer Santa Rosa tracts were built.
Zinsco panels, also branded Sylvania-Zinsco, suffer from bus bar deterioration. The aluminum bus corrodes at the breaker connection point, the connection overheats, and the breaker again fails to trip when it should. Zinsco largely stopped being installed by the mid-1970s, so these appear most often in Petaluma, older Santa Rosa neighborhoods, the city of Sonoma, and the pre-1975 housing throughout Marin.
Neither brand can be brought up to current standards, because compliant replacement parts are no longer manufactured. Both are increasingly flagged by insurance carriers during underwriting, and some carriers will not renew a policy until the panel is replaced.
If you are not sure what you have, open the panel cover door — the outer door, not the panel cover itself — and look for the brand name on the label or on the breaker faces. Federal Pacific breakers are usually marked Stab-Lok. Zinsco breakers often have distinctively colored handles. Send us a photo if you would rather not guess, and do not remove the panel cover yourself.
What Size Service Do You Actually Need
One hundred amp service suits a small home with gas appliances and no electric vehicle. It cannot support Level 2 EV charging alongside electric appliances, and it is increasingly a barrier to anything you might want to add later.
One hundred twenty-five and 150-amp service covers a mid-size home with one major electric load. It fills up quickly the moment an EV charger or a heat pump enters the picture.
Two hundred amp service is the standard for most single-family homes today. It handles an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, and a solar interconnection in most cases, with capacity left over. This is what the majority of our upgrades install.
Four hundred amp service applies to large homes, properties with an ADU or a detached shop, households with multiple electric vehicles, or homes with a pool and extensive outdoor equipment. It requires more involved utility coordination and, in some cases, PG&E design work.
The right answer comes from a load calculation rather than a rule of thumb. We calculate based on your home’s square footage, existing appliances, and the loads you actually plan to add, including the ones you are only thinking about for three years from now. We would rather install 200-amp service once than install 150 and come back.
What the Process Involves
We begin with a site evaluation and load calculation, looking at the existing panel, meter location, grounding system, and service entrance, then calculating required capacity.
Next comes the permit, filed with the correct jurisdiction — the City of Rohnert Park, Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Cotati, Windsor, Permit Sonoma for unincorporated county, or the appropriate Marin or Napa building department.
Then PG&E coordination. Panel replacement requires the utility to disconnect service so the work can be done safely. PG&E asks for advance notice on disconnect and reconnect requests, and that scheduling window is frequently the longest part of the entire timeline, longer than the electrical work itself. We start it early.
Installation covers the new panel, meter socket, service conductors, main breaker, and a full grounding and bonding upgrade including grounding electrode conductor, ground rods, and water pipe bonding. Most residential panel swaps are a one-day job with power restored the same evening.
The local inspector then signs off and PG&E energizes the new service.
Finally, labeling. Every circuit identified and the directory filled out legibly. This sounds trivial until you need to kill a specific circuit in a hurry and the label says “kitchen?” in faded pencil.
Typical timeline runs four to eight weeks from first call to final energization on a standard 100-to-200-amp upgrade, with most of that being permit processing and utility scheduling. Like-for-like replacements move faster. Service relocations and 400-amp upgrades take longer.
Panel Replacement Versus Panel Upgrade
These terms get used interchangeably and they are not the same job.
A panel replacement installs new equipment at the same service size. The trigger is condition rather than capacity — a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel, corroded or damaged bus bars, a panel that has overheated, water intrusion, an insurance requirement, or equipment simply at the end of its service life. Your electrical demand has not changed. The equipment protecting it is no longer trustworthy.
A panel upgrade increases service capacity, typically from 100 to 200 amps. The trigger is demand — you are adding an EV charger, a heat pump, an induction range, solar, or an ADU, and the existing service cannot carry it.
Most Sonoma County homes that need one turn out to need both, and doing them together costs considerably less than doing them separately. If we are already replacing the panel, the incremental cost of going to 200-amp service is a fraction of what a second project would cost two years later. When a straight replacement is genuinely all you need, we will tell you that.
Subpanel Installation
A subpanel is a secondary distribution panel fed from the main service panel, used to extend circuits to a detached structure or to add capacity where the main panel has run out of physical space.
We install subpanels for detached garages and workshops, ADUs and guest units, backyard offices and studios, pool and spa equipment, barns and outbuildings, home additions, and main panels that have run out of breaker slots but still have adequate service capacity.
The work that determines whether a subpanel is installed correctly is mostly invisible afterward. Correct feeder sizing for both the load and the distance. Proper voltage drop calculation on long runs, because a two hundred foot run to a shop requires a different conductor than a twenty foot run to a garage. Correct separation of neutrals and grounds at the subpanel. A proper grounding electrode system at detached structures. Correctly rated conduit and burial depth for underground feeders.
Undersized feeders are one of the most common defects we find in existing subpanels, usually installed by someone who sized the wire for the breaker rather than for the length of the run.
Meter Socket, Service Mast, and Service Entrance Work
The equipment between the utility line and your panel takes weather and age harder than anything inside the house.
We handle meter socket replacement, service mast and weatherhead replacement, service entrance conductor replacement, overhead-to-underground service conversion, service relocation, and repair of damaged or pulled-loose masts after a storm.

EV Charger Installation
A Level 2 EV charger is a 240-volt charging station on a dedicated circuit, typically 40 to 60 amps, that charges an electric vehicle roughly five to seven times faster than a standard 120-volt outlet. Bright Right Electric installs Level 2 chargers for homes throughout Sonoma, Marin, and Napa County.
Level 1 Versus Level 2
Level 1 charging uses an ordinary 120-volt household outlet and adds roughly three to five miles of range per hour. For a plug-in hybrid or a car that rarely leaves town, it is genuinely adequate. For anyone driving more than about thirty miles a day it stops being practical quickly, since a fully depleted battery can take two to four days to recover.
Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 240-volt circuit and adds roughly twenty-five to forty miles of range per hour, taking most vehicles from low to full overnight. It requires a permit and inspection. It also requires panel capacity that a great many Sonoma County homes do not have.
Can Your Panel Actually Support a Charger
This is the question most homeowners get answered too late.
An EV charger is a continuous load, which means the circuit must be sized at 125 percent of the charger’s rated draw. A 48-amp charger requires a 60-amp circuit. On a 100-amp panel already serving an electric range, dryer, and water heater, that capacity may simply not exist.
We perform the load calculation before you purchase equipment rather than after. If the panel supports the charger, we say so. If it does not, we lay out the two honest options: upgrade the service, or install a load management device that shares capacity between the charger and other large loads. Both are legitimate solutions, and which one is right depends on what else you plan to add over the next few years.
We would rather have this conversation at the estimate than after you have a charger sitting in a box in the garage.
Tesla Wall Connector Installation
We install Tesla Wall Connectors for Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck, hardwired on a dedicated circuit.
Hardwiring is worth understanding. A hardwired Wall Connector supports higher charging amperage than a plug-in NEMA 14-50 configuration, so on a panel with available capacity you get meaningfully faster charging for the same installation visit. Plenty of Tesla owners are running a mobile connector from a 14-50 outlet and leaving a substantial amount of charging speed unused without realizing it.
Everything Else We Install
Universal J1772 and NACS chargers, ChargePoint, Emporia, Wallbox, Grizzl-E, Enphase, and Autel units. We will install a charger you have already purchased rather than requiring you to buy hardware through us.
We also handle NEMA 14-50 outlet installation for plug-in charging, second circuit pre-wiring for households anticipating another electric vehicle, installation in detached garages and at the end of long driveways where voltage drop enters the wire sizing calculation, load management device installation, charger relocation, and replacement of failed units.
Most straightforward residential installs are completed in one day once the permit is issued. Installs requiring a panel upgrade first, or a long run through finished walls, an attic, or a crawlspace, take longer.
Bidirectional and Vehicle-to-Home Charging
A bidirectional charger allows a compatible electric vehicle to discharge power back into a home, effectively turning the vehicle’s battery into backup power during an outage.
In a region with regular multi-day public safety power shutoffs, this is a genuinely useful capability rather than a novelty. An electric vehicle battery holds several times the energy of a typical home battery.
The electrical requirements are specific, involving transfer equipment, interconnection, and utility notification, and the vehicle and the charger must both support the function. We handle the installation and the coordination. Ask us whether your specific vehicle qualifies before you buy hardware.
Standby Generators and Backup Power
A standby generator is a permanently installed unit wired to an automatic transfer switch that restores power to a home within seconds of an outage, without anyone needing to be home. In Sonoma, Napa, and parts of Marin County, this has stopped being a luxury purchase.
Why This Matters More Here
PG&E de-energizes distribution lines across the North Bay during high fire risk conditions under its Public Safety Power Shutoff program, and those events can run for days. Homes on well water lose their water supply along with everything else. Properties with refrigerated storage, medical equipment, or livestock systems lose considerably more than convenience. Rural Penngrove, the Sonoma Valley, Glen Ellen, Calistoga, and the western and northern reaches of Sonoma County are hit hardest and most repeatedly.
Your Real Options
A whole-house standby generator is permanently installed, runs on natural gas or propane, and is wired to an automatic transfer switch that senses the outage and starts the unit without anyone present. It picks up the entire house. This is the highest cost and the highest convenience option, and it requires a fuel supply, a pad, and specific clearances from windows, doors, and property lines.
A critical-loads panel with a standby generator uses a smaller unit feeding a subpanel that carries only what matters — well pump, refrigerator, furnace blower, internet, a few lighting and outlet circuits, medical equipment. It costs substantially less, and for most households it is entirely sufficient. This is the option we recommend most often, and the one most contractors skip past on the way to a larger sale.
Battery storage is silent, requires no fuel, produces no exhaust, needs essentially no maintenance, and recharges from solar during a multi-day outage. It is limited by capacity, which makes load management important. For homes that already have solar, it is increasingly the better answer.
A portable generator inlet with a manual transfer switch suits homeowners who already own a portable unit. We install a properly rated inlet and transfer switch so the generator can safely feed the house. This is the correct alternative to running extension cords through a window or, worse, backfeeding through a dryer outlet, which energizes the utility line and can kill a line worker.
What We Handle
Standby generator installation and automatic transfer switch wiring, critical-loads subpanel design and installation, battery storage installation and integration with existing solar, whole-house surge protection, generator inlet and manual transfer switch installation, generator circuit and fuel coordination with your plumber or propane supplier, and load prioritization so the system you buy actually covers what you need it to cover.
We will also tell you when a whole-house unit is more than your situation requires. A generator sized for a house you do not fully need to run is money spent on capacity that sits idle.
Home Battery Storage
A home battery stores electricity — from solar, from the grid, or both — and supplies it during outages or during expensive utility rate periods.
Between California’s shift in net metering economics and the frequency of shutoff events in this region, adding storage to an existing solar array is now often a better investment than adding more panels. It is also the only backup option that works silently, requires no fuel deliveries, and needs essentially no maintenance.
We install whole-home and critical-loads backup configurations, integrate batteries with existing solar arrays, install battery systems without solar for outage protection and rate management, and handle the transfer equipment and interconnection.
We are also direct about capacity. A battery that runs your whole house for four hours is a different product from one that runs your essentials for two days, and which you need depends on what you are protecting against. We would rather size it honestly than sell you a number.
Electrical Troubleshooting and Repair
Electrical troubleshooting is the diagnostic process of isolating a fault to its physical source — a specific connection, device, conductor, or breaker — rather than replacing components until the symptom goes away.
This is the service where twenty years of experience produces a visibly different outcome, and it is a large share of what Bright Right Electric does.
What We Get Called For
Breakers that trip repeatedly, immediately, or only under certain conditions. Circuits that go completely dead. Lights that flicker or dim when an appliance cycles on. Outlets that stop working or no longer grip a plug. GFCI outlets that will not reset. A burning or fishy smell near a panel, outlet, or switch. Warm or discolored outlets and cover plates. Buzzing from a panel or a dimmer. Shocks from appliances, fixtures, or faucets. Half the house losing power while the other half works, which is usually a lost neutral and a genuine hazard rather than an inconvenience.
How We Actually Find It
We start with the symptom pattern, because a breaker that trips instantly on reset indicates something entirely different from one that trips after twenty minutes under load. From there the work involves panel inspection and thermal check, circuit tracing and load measurement, voltage drop testing, insulation resistance testing where warranted, and physical inspection of terminations, junction boxes, and the backs of devices.
In older North Bay homes the culprit is most often a failed backstab connection at a receptacle, a corroded or loose neutral, a junction box buried behind drywall during a previous remodel, rodent damage in a crawlspace or attic, or a deteriorated splice in an outdoor or underground run.
We find the cause and repair it. We do not swap a breaker, charge for the visit, and wait for you to call back.

Call Immediately If You Have
A burning, fishy, or melting-plastic smell near a panel, outlet, or switch. Smoke, sparks, or arcing from any electrical equipment. A panel or breaker that is hot, discolored, or scorched. Buzzing or crackling from a panel. Water intrusion at or near a panel, meter, or outlet. A downed or damaged service line, meter, or mast. A shock from an appliance, fixture, switch, or faucet. Half the house dead while the other half works, or lights that brighten and dim erratically, which is the lost neutral pattern and damages electronics as well as creating a fire risk. Total loss of power when your neighbors still have service.
What to Do Before We Arrive
If it is safe to reach the panel, turn off the main breaker. Do not use the affected circuits. Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips immediately, because it is doing its job. Do not remove the panel cover. If you see or smell smoke, leave the building and call 911 first.
If the damage is on the utility side — a downed line, a damaged mast, a problem at the meter — call PG&E at 1-800-743-5000. Describe what you are seeing when you call us and we will tell you which side of the meter the problem is on.
What Counts as an Emergency and What Does Not
We would rather be straight with you than bill a Saturday rate for something that can wait. A single dead outlet, one tripped circuit that resets and holds, or a light fixture that stopped working are real problems we will schedule promptly, but they are not emergencies and you should not pay emergency rates for them.

Whole-House Rewiring
A whole-house rewire replaces a home’s branch circuit wiring, devices, and usually the panel, with modern grounded conductors that meet current code. It is the correct fix for homes with knob-and-tube, deteriorated cloth-insulated conductors, or aluminum branch circuit wiring.
Bright Right Electric handles rewires across the older housing in Petaluma’s historic district, the pre-war neighborhoods near Santa Rosa Junior College and Railroad Square, downtown Sonoma and Healdsburg, and the 1920s through 1940s cottages throughout San Anselmo, Fairfax, and Mill Valley.
Knob-and-Tube Wiring
Used roughly from the 1880s through the 1940s. Ungrounded, with no equipment grounding conductor, and insulated with rubber that becomes brittle and falls away when disturbed. It is genuinely dangerous when buried in insulation, which nearly every attic now is, because the system was designed to shed heat into open air.
Knob-and-tube is frequently a barrier to obtaining or renewing homeowner’s insurance, and it is one of the most common reasons a home sale stalls during the inspection contingency period.
Cloth-Insulated Cable
Common from the 1930s through the 1960s. It often has a reduced-size equipment ground or none at all, and the outer sheathing degrades with heat and age. Sometimes serviceable and sometimes not, depending entirely on condition, and condition varies room to room within the same house. We assess rather than assume.
Aluminum Branch Circuit Wiring
Used roughly from 1965 to 1973 in single-family homes. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper, which loosens terminations over time and creates high-resistance connections that generate heat at outlets and switches.
This does not always require a full rewire. Approved AlumiConn or COPALUM connections at every termination are an accepted remediation and cost far less than rewiring. But it does require action, and pigtailing with ordinary wire nuts, which we find constantly, is not an approved repair and makes the problem worse by adding another dissimilar-metal connection.
How We Approach It
A full rewire is invasive and we say so up front rather than discovering it together on day three. We work in phases where that makes sense, prioritize by actual risk rather than by convenience, cut access strategically to minimize drywall repair, and coordinate with your general contractor when the rewire is part of a larger remodel.
Every rewire includes new grounded receptacles, AFCI and GFCI protection where the code requires it, updated smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, and a fully labeled panel.
We are equally honest about when a rewire is not necessary. Plenty of homes need three circuits addressed rather than thirty, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Recessed Lighting Installation
Recessed lighting installation places fixtures inside the ceiling cavity so the trim sits flush with the ceiling surface, producing even light without a hanging fixture. It is the single most requested lighting upgrade we perform in Sonoma County homes, and in most rooms it is a one-day job.
What Drives the Cost and Timeline
A typical room — kitchen, living room, primary bedroom — takes four to eight cans and one working day. Larger open-plan spaces and whole-floor retrofits run longer.
The variables that actually move the price are attic access, ceiling construction, whether the room has existing switched circuits to tie into, and how much drywall patching the layout requires. Homes with open attic space above the ceiling are the easiest and least expensive. Two-story homes where the target ceiling has finished floor above are more involved, because the wiring has to be fished through a closed joist bay.
What Most Homeowners Get Wrong
Layout matters more than fixture count. Cans placed on a uniform grid light a room evenly and flatly. Cans placed to wash the walls make a room feel larger and better finished. We lay out the plan before cutting a single hole, based on what the room is actually used for, because task lighting over a kitchen counter is a different placement problem than ambient light in a living room.
Dimmer compatibility is a real problem. Most LED installations that flicker, buzz, or cut out at low levels are not defective fixtures. They are the wrong dimmer paired with the wrong driver. We match the dimmer to the load, which is why our installs dim smoothly instead of dropping out at twenty percent.
Insulation contact and fire ratings are not optional. Fixtures buried in attic insulation must be IC-rated, and ceilings forming part of a fire-rated assembly require fixtures rated for that assembly. This is a frequent failure point in unpermitted work and a common inspection flag.
Some ceilings cannot take recessed lighting at all. In Eichler homes and other mid-century post-and-beam construction, common in Terra Linda and scattered through Marin, there is no ceiling cavity to recess into. Conventional cans are not an option. The right answers are surface-mount, track, or beam-integrated lighting, and we will tell you that before we cut anything.

LED Lighting and Retrofits
An LED retrofit replaces incandescent, halogen, or fluorescent lighting with LED, typically cutting lighting energy use by sixty to eighty percent while lasting many times longer than what it replaced.
Most homes we work in are partway there already, with a few bulbs swapped and the rest original. A proper conversion is more than changing lamps.
Converting Old Recessed Cans
Recessed housings from the 1980s and 1990s were built for incandescent lamps that ran hot and threw light in a narrow cone. Dropping an LED lamp into them works, but it wastes most of the fixture’s potential.
Retrofit trim kits replace the trim and lamp as a single sealed LED unit that seats into the existing housing, producing better beam spread and better dimming with no ceiling work required. Canless wafer LEDs eliminate the housing entirely, which is the right answer when the old housings are damaged, are not IC-rated, or sit in a ceiling with no attic access above.
Fluorescent Removal
Kitchens and laundry rooms across Sonoma County still have the 1970s and 1980s fluorescent box — ceiling fixture, plastic diffuser, humming ballast. A lamp swap cannot fix this, because the ballast is the problem. We remove the fixture and ballast entirely and replace it with recessed cans, a flat panel LED, or a modern surface fixture depending on the ceiling and the room.
Color Temperature, Rendering, and Dimming
Color temperature decides whether you like the result. Twenty-seven hundred Kelvin reads warm and close to incandescent, which most people prefer in living rooms and bedrooms. Three thousand Kelvin is slightly cleaner and works well in kitchens and bathrooms. Four thousand Kelvin and above reads cold in a home and belongs in garages and workshops. Mixing color temperatures within a single sightline is the most common reason a finished LED job looks subtly wrong.
Color rendering matters nearly as much. A CRI of ninety or higher makes skin tones, wood, and paint colors read correctly. Inexpensive LEDs at CRI eighty make a well-designed room look flat, and it is not obvious why until you see the two side by side.
Dimming is where most complaints originate. LED loads draw a fraction of what incandescent lamps drew, and most dimmers installed before roughly 2010 cannot regulate that low. This is the cause of nearly every flicker and buzz we get called about.
Smart controls round it out. Smart switches and dimmers, scene control, motion and vacancy sensing, timer control for exterior lighting. We install systems that work from the wall switch as well as from a phone, because a lighting system only your phone can operate is one your houseguests cannot use.

Landscape and Outdoor Lighting
Landscape lighting is a low-voltage exterior system, typically twelve volt, fed from a transformer on a GFCI-protected 120-volt circuit, that illuminates paths, plantings, architectural features, and outdoor living areas.
It is one of the few exterior improvements that pays back in both use and appearance. It extends the usable hours of a patio or deck, improves safety on steps and pathways, and adds perceived property value out of proportion to its cost. It is also the outdoor electrical work most commonly done badly, with big-box kits running undersized transformers, cable buried too shallow, and connections that corrode through within two seasons.
What We Install
Path and step lighting for walkways, stairs, and grade changes, aimed to light the surface rather than shine into the eye.
Uplighting and tree lighting for oaks, redwoods, olives, and architectural features. On wine country properties this is frequently the highest-impact element of an entire design.
Patio, deck, and outdoor kitchen lighting, including circuits for outdoor kitchens, pergolas, and covered structures.
Security and motion lighting, covering motion sensors, floodlights, photocell and timer control, dusk-to-dawn fixtures, and camera and doorbell circuits.
Pool and spa area lighting, installed to the clearance and bonding requirements that apply near water.
Repair and rebuild of existing systems, including failed transformers, corroded connections, severed buried runs, and conversion of aging halogen systems to LED. That conversion typically cuts the load enough that your existing transformer will carry substantially more fixtures than it does now.
How We Do It Right
Proper transformer sizing with headroom for later additions. Correctly gauged direct-burial cable sized for the run length, so fixtures at the far end are not visibly dimmer than the ones near the transformer. Weatherproof connections rather than twist-on connectors in a buried box. Cable buried at proper depth and routed where future landscaping will not sever it. Zoned control so the patio and the driveway are not stuck on one schedule.
Light Fixtures, Chandeliers, and Fixture Swaps
Installation and replacement of ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, pendant lights, sconces, vanity lighting, flush and semi-flush mounts, track lighting, and picture and art lighting.
Two situations come up constantly and are worth mentioning. High-ceiling and stairwell fixtures need proper access equipment and frequently a support box rated for the fixture weight, since the existing box in a 1970s entryway was often installed for a fixture a fraction of what is going up now. Heavy chandeliers require a fixture-rated box and sometimes structural blocking added from above, which means attic access or a small amount of ceiling work.
Straight fixture swaps, replacing an existing fixture with a new one, are typically a quick visit. We are happy to do a single one rather than requiring a larger project, and we will install fixtures you purchased elsewhere.
Ceiling Fan Installation
Ceiling fan installation requires a fan-rated support box capable of carrying both the weight and the rotational load of a moving fan. An ordinary lighting box is not rated for it, and this is the most common defect we find in existing fan installations.
We install new ceiling fans, replace existing ones, add fans to rooms that never had them, and upgrade support boxes that were never rated for fan use. This includes fans on sloped and vaulted ceilings with the appropriate downrod and canopy, remote and wall control installation, fan and light combinations, and outdoor-rated fans for patios and covered decks.
If a room has no existing ceiling fixture, adding a fan means running a new circuit and installing a switch, which is a different scope than a straight replacement. We will tell you which one you are looking at before we quote.
Ceiling fans are also one of the more cost-effective comfort upgrades available in Sonoma County, where evening temperatures drop enough that moving air through a house often accomplishes what air conditioning would otherwise be asked to do.
Attic Fans and Whole-House Fans
A whole-house fan pulls cool evening air through open windows and exhausts hot air out through the attic, cooling an entire house in a fraction of the time and at a fraction of the operating cost of air conditioning. An attic fan is a smaller unit that ventilates only the attic space, reducing heat buildup that radiates down into living areas.
These are exceptionally well suited to the North Bay climate. Sonoma County’s daily temperature swing, with hot afternoons and cool evenings, is precisely the condition a whole-house fan is designed to exploit. Many homes here can go most of the summer without running air conditioning at all if the fan is sized and installed correctly.
We handle whole-house fan installation including the dedicated circuit and control, attic ventilation fan installation, solar-powered attic fan wiring, thermostat and humidistat control installation, timer and speed control, and replacement of failed units.
Sizing matters more than brand. An undersized fan will not move enough air to matter, and an oversized fan without adequate attic exhaust venting will depressurize the house, which in homes with gas appliances can backdraft a water heater. We calculate the required airflow and confirm the attic has the net free venting area to support it.
Bathroom Exhaust Fans
Installation and replacement of bathroom exhaust fans, fan and light combinations, fan-light-heater units, humidity-sensing and timer controls, and quiet high-airflow units for primary bathrooms.
The most common problem we find is a fan that vents into the attic rather than outside. This is not a code-compliant installation, and it deposits every bit of shower moisture into your insulation and roof framing. In Sonoma County’s cool, damp winters, that produces mold and rot in a space nobody looks at until there is a stain on the ceiling. We correct these regularly, routing the duct to an exterior termination with a proper damper.
We also correct undersized fans. A fan that cannot clear a bathroom in a reasonable time is functionally decorative, and the required airflow depends on the room volume.
Smoke Detectors and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
California requires working smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level of a home, and carbon monoxide alarms in homes with attached garages or fuel-burning appliances. Requirements are triggered at point of sale and whenever a permit is pulled for other work, which catches a lot of homeowners by surprise mid-project.
We install and replace hardwired interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide alarm systems, where one alarm sounding sets off all of them, along with battery backup units, combination smoke and CO alarms, and ten-year sealed battery units where hardwiring is impractical.
Interconnection matters more than most people realize. A smoke alarm in a detached back bedroom that sounds alone at three in the morning may not wake anyone at the other end of the house. Interconnected systems wake everyone at once, and in an older home that requires either running new wiring or installing wireless-interconnect units, both of which we do.
Whole-House Surge Protection
A whole-house surge protective device installs at the panel and clamps voltage spikes before they reach anything downstream, protecting every circuit in the house rather than only what is plugged into a power strip.
This matters in the North Bay more than in most places. The damaging surge usually arrives not when the power goes out but when it comes back on, and this region sees a great many restoration events between storms, equipment failures, and public safety power shutoffs.
Modern homes are also far more vulnerable than older ones. Every appliance now contains a control board. A surge that a 1975 refrigerator would have shrugged off will kill the electronics in a 2024 one, along with the HVAC control board, the induction range, the EV charger, and the solar inverter.
We install panel-mounted surge protective devices as a standalone job and as part of every panel upgrade, plus point-of-use protection for sensitive equipment where it makes sense.
GFCI and AFCI Protection
GFCI protection shuts off a circuit when current leaks to ground, which is the condition that electrocutes people. It is required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, crawlspaces, unfinished basements, outdoor locations, near sinks and wet bars, and at EV charging receptacles.
AFCI protection detects the electrical signature of an arcing fault, which is the condition that starts fires. It is required on most 120-volt, fifteen and twenty amp branch circuits serving living areas in dwelling units.
We install and replace GFCI receptacles and breakers, AFCI breakers, and dual-function devices, and we troubleshoot GFCIs that trip repeatedly or will not reset.
That last one is worth explaining. A GFCI that keeps tripping is usually not a defective GFCI. It is detecting something real, whether moisture in an outdoor box, a failing appliance, a damaged conductor, or a shared neutral wired incorrectly during a previous remodel. Replacing the device without finding the cause removes the warning and leaves the hazard in place. We find the cause.
Outlets, Switches, and Dimmers
Additional outlets where a room never had enough. Replacement of ungrounded two-prong receptacles with properly grounded devices. USB and USB-C outlets. Weather-resistant and in-use covered exterior outlets. Floor outlets. Countertop and island outlets to current code spacing. Switch replacement, three-way and four-way switching, occupancy sensors, timers, and smart switches. Dimmer installation matched to the fixture load.
Two-prong outlet replacement deserves explanation because it is done wrong so often. Simply installing a three-prong receptacle on an ungrounded circuit is a code violation and a hazard, because it advertises a ground that is not there, and any surge protector plugged into it is not actually protecting anything. The correct approaches are running a proper ground, or installing a GFCI with the required no-equipment-ground labeling. We do it correctly and explain which option applies to your circuit.
Dedicated Appliance Circuits
Modern appliances draw more than the circuits in most older homes were designed to deliver, and sharing a circuit is precisely why breakers trip when two things run at once.
We install dedicated circuits for electric ranges and induction cooktops, wall ovens, electric dryers, dishwashers, garbage disposals, microwaves, refrigerators and freezers, electric water heaters and heat pump water heaters, heat pumps and mini-split systems, window and wall air conditioners, hot tubs and spas, pool equipment, well and sump pumps, garage and shop equipment, air compressors, welders, kitchen small-appliance circuits, and home office and network equipment.
Each carries its own requirements for conductor sizing, overcurrent protection, GFCI protection, and disconnect location. These are the details that separate a passed inspection from a correction notice.
Home Electrification
Home electrification means replacing gas appliances with electric equivalents, including heat pumps for heating and cooling, heat pump water heaters, and induction cooking. It almost always runs into the same obstacle, which is panel capacity.
This is one of the fastest-growing categories of work in Sonoma County, driven by rebate programs, gas appliance phase-outs in new construction, and homeowners simply replacing equipment at the end of its life. It is also where homeowners most often discover mid-project that their electrical service cannot support the plan.
We handle the electrical scope: load calculations that account for the full electrification path rather than one appliance at a time, dedicated circuits for heat pumps and mini-split systems, heat pump water heater circuits, induction range and cooktop circuits, panel upgrades where capacity requires it, and load management devices where a panel upgrade is impractical or where the service entrance cannot easily be enlarged.
The advice we give most often is to plan the whole electrification path before doing the first piece of it. A homeowner who upgrades to 200-amp service once, knowing an EV charger, a heat pump, and an induction range are all coming, spends far less than one who does three separate projects and discovers the capacity limit on the third.
Hot Tubs, Spas, and Pools
Hot tub and pool wiring carries some of the most specific requirements in the electrical code, because water dramatically changes the consequences of a fault.
We install dedicated hot tub and spa circuits, GFCI protection, the required disconnect at the code-mandated distance from the water, equipotential bonding, pool equipment circuits for pumps, heaters, and automation, pool and spa lighting circuits, and outdoor receptacles at compliant distances.
Equipotential bonding is the requirement most often skipped by unlicensed installers, and it is the one that matters most. It ties all conductive components around the water to the same electrical potential so there is no voltage difference for a person to bridge. Failing to install it is not a technicality. It is the difference between a shock and nothing at all.
We also frequently get called to correct hot tub installations done by a previous owner or by a tub dealer’s subcontractor. If your tub is fed by an extension cord, plugged into an ordinary outlet, or has no visible disconnect, it needs attention.
Well Pumps, Sump Pumps, and Rural Electrical
Rural properties across Penngrove, west county, the Sonoma Valley, and outlying Marin and Napa have a different set of electrical needs, and a much higher cost when power fails.
We install and repair well pump circuits, controls, and disconnects; sump pump circuits and backup arrangements; pressure tank and control wiring; long underground runs to outbuildings with proper voltage drop calculation; barn, shop, and outbuilding subpanels; agricultural equipment circuits; irrigation controller wiring; and gate and driveway operator circuits.
On a well system, losing power means losing water. That is why backup power is a different conversation on a rural property than in town, and why a critical-loads panel that keeps the pump running is often the single most valuable thing we install.
Garage, Workshop, and Detached Structures
Garage and shop subpanels, 240-volt circuits for welders, compressors, table saws, and equipment, dedicated freezer and refrigerator circuits, EV charger circuits in detached garages, LED shop lighting, additional outlets at usable heights and spacings, exterior outlets and lighting, and complete electrical for detached offices, studios, and workshops.
Detached structures have specific requirements that get missed regularly, including a grounding electrode system at the structure, correct separation of neutrals and grounds at the subpanel, and a disconnecting means at the building. We handle these correctly, and we correct them when we find them done wrong.
Smart Home, Data, and Low-Voltage Wiring
Smart switches, dimmers, and control systems. Video doorbell and security camera circuits. Network and data cabling, including Cat6 runs and structured wiring panels. WiFi access point wiring for homes where a single router cannot cover the footprint. Whole-home audio wiring. Home theater circuits and cabling. Automated shade and blind wiring. Gate, garage door, and driveway sensor circuits. Complete low-voltage rough-in for new construction and remodels.
The right time to run low-voltage cable is when the walls are open. The second-best time is with a fish tape and a great deal of patience. We do both, but we will always tell you when a remodel is the moment to run more than you think you need, because the incremental cost during rough-in is small and the retrofit cost later is not.
Grounding and Bonding
Grounding and bonding is the system that gives fault current a safe path back to its source, and it is what makes every other protective device in your home work as designed.
An ungrounded or improperly bonded system means breakers may not trip when they should, surge protection has nothing to divert energy into, and metal parts that should never be energized can become live.
We install and correct grounding electrode systems including ground rods and concrete-encased electrodes, grounding electrode conductors, water pipe and gas line bonding, panel bonding and neutral-ground separation at subpanels, equipment grounding conductors on circuits that lack them, and bonding for pools, spas, and detached structures.
This work is invisible when finished, which is exactly why it gets skipped. It is also one of the first things a good inspector checks and one of the most common findings on a home inspection report.
Code Compliance and Corrections
Code compliance work brings an existing electrical system up to current California Electrical Code requirements, most often ahead of a real estate transaction, an insurance inspection, a refinance, or in response to a correction notice.
We handle grounding and bonding corrections, replacement of ungrounded two-prong receptacles, GFCI and AFCI additions, smoke and carbon monoxide alarm installation to current standards, junction box and splice corrections including buried or inaccessible boxes, panel labeling and working clearance corrections, double-tapped breaker corrections, removal of abandoned wiring, and correction of unpermitted work performed by previous owners.
That last category is a large share of this work. Sonoma County has a great deal of housing where a previous owner finished a garage, converted a porch, added a bathroom, or wired a shop without a permit. The work is often decades old and hidden behind finished surfaces. We assess what is there, tell you what is genuinely unsafe versus what is merely non-compliant, and correct it in a documented, permitted way that closes the issue for good.
Electrical Safety Inspections
An electrical safety inspection is a documented walkthrough of the panel, grounding system, wiring methods, device condition, and alarm coverage, with findings sorted by actual urgency.
We provide inspections for homebuyers during the contingency period, sellers preparing to list, insurance requirements, and homeowners who simply want to know what they have.
Our reports sort findings into three categories: what is unsafe now and needs correcting, what should be addressed within the year, and what can reasonably wait. That distinction is the entire value of the report. A list of forty code deviations with no prioritization is not useful to anyone making a decision under a seventeen-day contingency clock.
Buyers in Sonoma County order these regularly, and it is a far better use of money than discovering a Federal Pacific panel and knob-and-tube in the attic after close of escrow.
Remodels, Additions, and ADUs

Kitchen remodels carry more electrical scope than anything else in a house, including small appliance circuits at required spacing, dedicated circuits for the range, dishwasher, disposal, and microwave, GFCI protection throughout, under-cabinet and island lighting, and increasingly an induction range circuit where a gas line used to be.
Bathroom remodels need GFCI protection, a dedicated circuit, adequate exhaust ventilation ducted outside, vanity and shower lighting rated for damp locations, and often a heated floor circuit.
ADUs and garage conversions have become a substantial part of this work across Sonoma County. An ADU requires either a subpanel fed from the existing service or a separate service entirely, and that decision affects cost, metering, permit path, and whether the main service needs upgrading first. It is worth resolving before the plans are finalized rather than after.
Rohnert Park in particular has streamlined its ADU process and also runs a program encouraging homeowners to legalize previously unpermitted ADU and junior ADU structures. If you are bringing an existing unpermitted conversion into compliance, the electrical is usually a significant piece of it, involving a proper subpanel and feeder, GFCI and AFCI protection, grounding, egress lighting, and interconnected smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. We have done this work and we know what inspectors look for.

Commercial Subpanel Installation
A commercial subpanel is a secondary distribution panel fed from the main service, used to bring power to a specific tenant space, department, equipment area, or structure without running every circuit back to the main gear.
We install subpanels for tenant suites and demised spaces, production and equipment areas, kitchens and prep areas, server and IT rooms, warehouse and mezzanine areas, detached structures and outbuildings, parking areas and EV charging, and common areas in multi-tenant buildings.
Commercial subpanel work is less forgiving than residential. Feeder sizing has to account for both the connected load and the distance, and voltage drop across a long run in a warehouse or across a parking lot changes the conductor selection substantially. Panels serving three-phase loads need correct phase balancing, or one leg ends up carrying far more than the others and the service behaves as though it is undersized when it is not.
We also handle the parts that get skipped: correct working clearance in front of the panel, proper labeling and circuit identification, coordination of overcurrent protection between the main and the subpanel, and separate metering where a landlord needs to bill tenant usage.
If you are adding equipment, subdividing a space, or bringing in a new tenant with different power requirements, the subpanel decision usually determines whether the project is simple or expensive. We would rather look at it before the space plan is finalized.
Tenant Improvement Electrical

Indoor
Branch circuit installation and extension, receptacle and device installation, dedicated circuits for equipment and workstations, conduit and raceway installation including EMT, rigid, and flexible, cable tray and wire management, MC and AC cable installation, surface raceway where walls cannot be opened, floor boxes and poke-throughs for open office layouts, modular furniture power connections, machine and equipment feeds, control wiring, and circuit additions to existing panels.
Much of this work happens in occupied buildings where the space has to stay usable. We sequence around business hours where needed, keep work areas contained, and stage material so a corridor does not become a storage yard for three weeks.
Outdoor
Exterior receptacles and weatherproof in-use covers, underground conduit and trenching, direct-burial feeder runs to detached structures and site equipment, conduit under paving and landscaping, exterior disconnects and equipment feeds, HVAC and rooftop equipment circuits, irrigation and pump controller wiring, gate and access control circuits, EV charging infrastructure runs, sign and lighting circuits, and repair of failed or damaged underground runs.
Outdoor commercial wiring fails for predictable reasons: conduit never properly sealed against water intrusion, direct-burial cable installed too shallow and later severed by landscaping or paving, and connections in below-grade boxes that were not rated for wet locations. We install to survive the conditions rather than to pass a walkthrough, and we locate and repair existing runs that have failed.
One note on trenching. If a trench is going to be open anyway, it costs very little to add spare conduit for future circuits and a great deal to reopen it later. We will always ask what you might add in the next five years before we backfill.
Commercial LED Lighting Retrofits
A commercial LED retrofit replaces fluorescent, metal halide, or high-pressure sodium lighting with LED, typically reducing lighting energy consumption by fifty to seventy-five percent while eliminating ballast and lamp replacement labor.
For most commercial properties it is the highest-return electrical project available, and the payback comes from three places at once: energy cost, maintenance labor, and reduced cooling load from fixtures that no longer throw heat into the space.
Retrofit or Full Replacement
Lamp and ballast bypass keeps the existing fixture housing and converts it to direct-wire LED tubes. It is the fastest and least expensive approach, appropriate when the housings are in good condition and the light distribution is already correct.
Full fixture replacement installs new LED fixtures throughout. It costs more up front and is the right call when housings are damaged or dated, when the existing layout produces uneven or inadequate light levels, or when the space needs different distribution than the original design provided, which is common in buildings that have changed use since they were built.
We will tell you which one your building actually needs. Retrofitting a bad lighting layout produces an energy-efficient version of a bad lighting layout.
Where We Do This Work
Warehouse and industrial high bay, replacing metal halide and T5 high output fixtures with LED, usually paired with occupancy sensing so aisles light on approach rather than burning all shift. Warehouses see the fastest payback of any building type, because the fixtures run long hours and sit in places that are expensive to reach for maintenance.
Office spaces, covering troffer replacement and retrofit, recessed and linear LED, task and ambient balance, and daylight-responsive control in perimeter zones.
Retail, covering track and accent lighting, display and case lighting, and high-CRI fixtures where merchandise color accuracy directly affects sales.

Title 24 Lighting Controls
This is where most commercial lighting projects go wrong, and it is worth understanding before you accept a quote.
California’s Title 24, Part 6 Energy Code pulls lighting controls into the scope of many retrofits and alterations, not only new construction. Depending on the project, that can mean occupancy or vacancy sensing, multi-level or dimming control, automatic shut-off, daylighting controls in daylit zones, and demand-responsive controls in larger buildings.
A contractor who quotes fixtures alone hands you a project that fails inspection and a change order to fix it. We scope the controls with the fixtures so the job passes the first time, and we coordinate acceptance testing where the project requires it.
Rebate and incentive programs for commercial lighting efficiency are periodically available through PG&E and third-party administrators, and terms change regularly. We can point you toward what is currently offered and provide the documentation these programs typically require.

What We Need From You When You Call
The address and suite, what specifically is not working, whether the whole building or one area is affected, whether anything smells or looks burned, and whether neighboring units still have power. Solar and Battery Services

That distinction matters more than it sounds. A great deal of the solar installed across the North Bay over the past fifteen years came from high-volume sales operations that no longer exist. Their customers now own a roof full of equipment with an expired warranty, no service relationship, and nobody answering the phone. We take those calls.
We also design and install new systems, and because we are electricians first, the parts of a solar project that most often go wrong are the parts we do every day: service capacity, panel busbar limits, interconnection, and getting a system through utility approval.
New Photovoltaic Installation
A photovoltaic system converts sunlight into DC electricity through roof or ground-mounted modules, and an inverter converts it to the AC power your home uses, with any excess exported to the grid under your utility’s interconnection tariff.
We size systems from your actual usage history and your realistic future load, including an electric vehicle, a heat pump, or a planned ADU, rather than from a target system size. Oversizing a system under current California rate structures is a genuine way to lose money, and undersizing it leaves you buying expensive grid power for years.
Site assessment covers roof condition and remaining service life, structural capacity, orientation and pitch, shading analysis across the seasons, and available electrical capacity. If your roof has fewer than ten years left, we will say so before you install a system that has to come off again. That conversation costs us a sale sometimes and saves the customer several thousand dollars.
System design covers module and inverter selection, string design or module-level power electronics, rapid shutdown compliance, conductor and conduit routing, and the point of interconnection.
Permitting and installation covers building and electrical permits with the correct jurisdiction, racking and module installation, inverter and rapid shutdown equipment, DC and AC conductor runs, disconnects and labeling, and interconnection at the panel or the service.
Finally, local inspection and PG&E interconnection through permission to operate. Until permission to operate is granted, a system cannot legally produce, and this is the step that most commonly strands homeowners whose installer disappeared mid-process.
We install roof-mounted and ground-mounted systems, work on composition, tile, metal, and flat roofs, and handle carport and patio-cover mounted arrays.
How California Solar Economics Actually Work Now
This section exists because more homeowners are misled about this than about anything else in solar.
California moved from traditional net energy metering to a net billing tariff, commonly called NEM 3.0, for new interconnection applications beginning in April 2023. The practical effect is straightforward: exported solar is credited at substantially less than the retail rate you pay for imported power.
Under the older tariff, a system producing more than the home used essentially banked full-value credits, and the correct strategy was to build the largest array the roof allowed. Under net billing, that math no longer holds. Exporting a kilowatt-hour at a low compensation rate and buying one back at an expensive evening rate is a losing trade, and doing more of it does not improve the outcome.
What changed the right answer is storage. Under net billing, a battery that stores midday production and discharges it during expensive evening hours captures far more value than exporting that same energy would. Self-consumption is now the economic objective rather than export volume.
Two consequences are worth understanding before you talk to anyone about solar. A quote recommending a very large array with no storage is usually built on the previous tariff’s logic, or on a commission structure tied to system size. And homeowners already on a legacy tariff from an older installation are generally grandfathered for a defined period, so if you have an existing system and are considering an expansion, adding capacity can affect that status. That is worth checking carefully before you add a single module, and we will look at it with you rather than guessing.
Incentive programs for storage, including California’s Self-Generation Incentive Program, have periodically been available with varying eligibility and funding. Terms change frequently and funding tiers open and close. We can point you toward what is currently offered without pretending to guarantee it.
Battery Storage
A home battery stores electricity, whether from solar, from the grid, or both, and supplies it during outages or during expensive utility rate periods.
Storage now does two jobs at once in the North Bay, and they are worth separating because they lead to different system designs.
Outage protection is the first. Sonoma, Napa, and parts of Marin experience public safety power shutoffs and storm outages that run for days. A battery covers this silently, with no fuel, no exhaust, no permit for a fuel line, and essentially no maintenance. Paired with solar it recharges each day, which makes it the only backup technology that can run indefinitely through a multi-day event.
Rate management is the second. Charging from solar or from inexpensive off-peak grid power and discharging during expensive peak hours captures the spread. Under net billing, this is where most of the financial return in a new solar project now lives.
Sizing it honestly matters. A battery that runs your whole house for four hours is a fundamentally different product from one that runs your essentials for two days, and the right choice depends on what you are protecting against.
Whole-home backup carries every circuit and requires enough capacity, often multiple units, to be meaningful during a long outage. It is appropriate when the budget supports it and the household genuinely cannot manage load.
Critical-loads backup feeds a subpanel carrying refrigeration, the well pump, internet, furnace blower, medical equipment, and selected lighting and outlets. It costs far less, and for most households it covers everything that actually matters during a two-day event.
We will tell you what a given capacity will and will not carry through a shutoff, in real terms rather than in marketing numbers. A battery specified without a load conversation is a guess.
We install new battery systems with solar, battery retrofits to existing arrays, standalone batteries without solar for outage protection and rate management, critical-loads subpanel design and installation, transfer and backup gateway equipment, multi-unit installations for larger backup requirements, and battery expansion on existing systems.
Panel Upgrades for Solar-Ready Service
Many Sonoma County homes cannot accept a solar interconnection without a main panel upgrade, not because the service is too small for the house, but because of a specific limit on how much backfed current a panel busbar can accept.
Here is the constraint in plain terms. When solar feeds into a panel, it pushes current in alongside the utility feed. The electrical code limits the combined total based on the panel’s busbar rating, commonly expressed as the 120 percent rule. A 100-amp panel with a 100-amp main frequently has no headroom at all for a backfed solar breaker, and a 200-amp panel with a 200-amp main has only a limited allowance.
This is why so many solar contracts produce a change order after signing. The salesperson quoted the array and nobody evaluated the panel.
We check this at the estimate. If a panel upgrade is required, it appears in the original scope and price rather than arriving as a surprise. And because we perform the panel work ourselves, there is no second contractor, no second permit process, and no scheduling gap between the two.
The workarounds where a full upgrade is not practical, including line-side taps, supply-side connections, derating the main breaker, or a meter main with integrated solar provisions, each carry their own requirements and utility considerations. We will tell you which applies to your service.
System Expansion and Additions
Adding modules to an existing array, adding a second array on a different roof plane or a ground mount, adding battery storage to a solar system installed before storage was common, adding EV charging capacity to a solar-equipped home, and inverter capacity upgrades to support additional modules.
Before expanding, two things need checking. First, whether your existing inverter has capacity for additional modules or whether it needs replacing, because adding panels to a maxed-out inverter accomplishes nothing. Second, whether the expansion affects your interconnection tariff status, which for legacy net metering customers can be a consequential question.
We look at both before quoting, because an expansion that moves you off a favorable legacy tariff can cost more than it produces.
Solar Service, Repair, and Troubleshooting
If your system is producing less than it used to, showing errors, or has gone dark entirely, it is diagnosable, and you do not need the original installer to fix it.
This is a growing share of our solar work. Sonoma County has thousands of arrays installed by companies that have since gone bankrupt, been acquired, or simply stopped answering. Homeowners are left with equipment they did not choose, documentation they never received, and warranties that may or may not still be honored by whoever inherited the obligation.
Production drops have a cause. A system generating noticeably less than it did last year is usually experiencing module failure, a failing optimizer or microinverter, string faults, ground faults, soiling, new shading from grown trees, or an inverter operating in a derated state.
Inverter failure is common and expected. String inverters typically have a shorter service life than the modules they serve, and a system installed a decade ago is squarely in inverter replacement territory. We diagnose, source, and replace inverters, including replacing discontinued units with current-generation equipment and reconfiguring the system where the replacement is not a direct swap.
Module-level electronics failure, meaning microinverter and power optimizer faults, usually shows as one or a few modules producing nothing while the rest work normally.
Rapid shutdown equipment is required by code and is a common source of nuisance faults as systems age.
Monitoring gone dark is its own category, covering lost communication, failed gateways, decommissioned monitoring platforms, and systems whose monitoring was tied to an account with a defunct company. Restoring visibility is often the first step in diagnosing everything else.
Ground faults and arc faults are frequently traced to conductor damage from rodents, UV degradation of exposed wiring, or connectors that were never fully seated at installation.
Physical damage covers storm and wind damage, rodent damage beneath arrays, damaged racking, loose or shifted modules, and roof penetrations that have begun leaking.
Orphaned system assessment is for the homeowner who inherited a system with the house and cannot find out how it is wired, what equipment it uses, whether it is still under warranty, or why production fell off last spring. We will assess it and give you a straight answer about what it needs and what that costs.
Remove and Replace
Full array removal and reinstallation for roof replacement, and removal and replacement of failed or obsolete systems.
For roof replacement, roofers will not touch the array, and the coordination between trades is exactly where these projects fail. We remove the array and racking, store the equipment safely, return once the roof is complete, reinstall with new flashings and proper penetrations, and recommission the system. We work on the roofer’s schedule rather than the other way around.
For system replacement, we remove failed or obsolete equipment and install a current-generation system. This applies frequently to early-generation installations where the inverter is discontinued, the modules have degraded, and repair costs approach replacement.
For decommissioning, we handle full removal where an array is being permanently retired, including proper disconnection, safe handling, and roof penetration sealing.
We also handle the case nobody wants, which is an array installed badly enough that the roof beneath it is failing. That is a joint problem with your roofer, and we will coordinate rather than point fingers.
EV and Bidirectional Charging With Solar
Solar, storage, and vehicle charging increasingly function as one system rather than three, and designing them together produces a better result than adding each in isolation.
We install Level 2 EV chargers integrated with solar and battery systems, load management so charging draws from production rather than from expensive grid power, charging schedules aligned to production and rate periods, and bidirectional and vehicle-to-home capable installations that let a compatible vehicle power the house during an outage.
That last capability deserves attention in this region specifically. An electric vehicle battery holds several times the energy of a typical home battery. For a household already investing in outage resilience, a bidirectional-capable vehicle can be the most cost-effective storage on the property. The requirements are specific, since the vehicle, the charger, and the transfer equipment must all support it, and we will tell you whether your setup qualifies before you spend anything.
Generator and Battery Backup Integration
Some properties need both. A battery covers the daily rate management and the first stretch of an outage silently. A generator covers the extended multi-day event, the winter week with little solar production, and the loads a battery cannot practically carry.
We design and install systems that combine them, including battery with generator backup, automatic transfer between sources, critical-loads distribution serving both, and control coordination so the system draws from the least expensive available source at any given moment.
For rural properties on well water, this combination is frequently the right answer. The battery handles routine outages without a sound. The generator is there for the week in January when a storm has taken the line down and the sun has not appeared in four days.
Utility Interconnection and Permission to Operate
No solar or battery system can legally operate until the utility grants permission to operate. Bright Right Electric manages that process from application through approval.
We handle interconnection application submission under the applicable tariff, single-line diagrams and required documentation, response to engineering review and utility questions, AC disconnect and metering requirements, coordination of the utility meter exchange, inspection scheduling with the local jurisdiction, and follow-through to permission to operate.
We also take on stranded interconnections, meaning systems that were installed but never received permission to operate because the installer went out of business, abandoned the project, or filed incomplete paperwork. Do I need a permit for electrical work in Sonoma County? Most electrical work beyond simple device replacement requires a permit. Panel upgrades, service changes, new circuits, EV charger installation, rewires, and solar interconnection all require permits and inspection in every jurisdiction we serve. We pull the permit as part of the job.
How long does a panel upgrade take? The physical work is usually one day with power restored the same evening. The full timeline from first call to final energization typically runs four to eight weeks, driven mostly by permit processing and PG&E disconnect scheduling rather than by the electrical work.
Will my power be off during a panel upgrade? Yes, for most of the working day. We schedule the PG&E disconnect for the morning and the reconnect for the afternoon so service is typically restored the same evening. We will tell you in advance if your specific situation is likely to run longer.
What is the difference between a panel replacement and a panel upgrade? A replacement installs new equipment at the same service size, usually because the existing panel is unsafe, damaged, or obsolete. An upgrade increases capacity, typically from 100 to 200 amps, because you are adding load. Most homes needing one benefit from both, and combining them costs far less than two separate projects.
How do I know if I have a Federal Pacific or Zinsco panel? Open the panel cover door, meaning the outer door rather than the panel cover, and look for the brand on the label or the breaker faces. Federal Pacific breakers are usually marked Stab-Lok. Zinsco breakers often have distinctively colored handles. Send us a photo if you are unsure, and do not remove the panel cover yourself.
Can I install an EV charger myself? A Level 2 charger requires a permit, a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized at 125 percent of the continuous load, and inspection. Unpermitted installations create insurance exposure, resale problems, and a genuine fire risk if the circuit is undersized.
Do I need to upgrade my panel to install an EV charger? Sometimes. It depends on your existing service size and what else is drawing power. We perform a load calculation before you buy equipment. If capacity is short, the options are a service upgrade or a load management device, and we will explain which fits your situation.
How much does recessed lighting cost? It depends on fixture count, ceiling construction, and attic access. A typical single room with four to eight cans is a one-day job. Homes with open attic space above are least expensive, while two-story homes with finished floor above the ceiling cost more because wiring must be fished through closed joist bays.
Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz on a dimmer? Almost always a dimmer and driver mismatch rather than a defective fixture. LED loads draw far less current than the incandescent loads older dimmers were built for. The fix is a dimmer rated for LED loads and matched to your specific fixtures.
Can you install recessed lighting in a home with exposed beams? Not conventionally, because there is no ceiling cavity to recess into. Surface-mount, track, or beam-integrated lighting are the right solutions, and we lay out the options before any work begins.
Can I add a ceiling fan where there is no existing fixture? Yes, though it requires running a new circuit and installing a switch, which is a larger scope than replacing an existing fan. It also requires a fan-rated support box, which an ordinary lighting box is not.
Is a whole-house fan worth it in Sonoma County? For most homes here, yes. The daily temperature swing of hot afternoons and cool evenings is exactly what a whole-house fan is designed to exploit, and many homes can go most of the summer without running air conditioning. Correct sizing and adequate attic exhaust venting determine whether it works.
My bathroom fan vents into the attic. Is that a problem? Yes, and it is not code compliant. It deposits shower moisture into your insulation and roof framing, which in Sonoma County’s damp winters produces mold and rot. We correct these regularly by routing the duct to an exterior termination with a proper damper.
Why does my GFCI keep tripping? My solar company went out of business. Can you help? Yes. Why is my solar producing less than it used to? Common causes are module or optimizer failure, string or ground faults, an inverter operating in a derated state or nearing end of life, new shading from tree growth, soiling, or monitoring reporting incorrectly. All of it is diagnosable. Some decline is normal degradation, but a noticeable year-over-year drop usually is not.
Do I need a battery with a new solar system? Under California’s current net billing tariff, exported solar is credited well below the retail rate you pay for imported power, which means storing your production and using it yourself is now worth substantially more than exporting it. For most new residential systems, storage is where the return lives.
Will I need a panel upgrade to install solar? Frequently, yes. The code limits how much backfed current a panel busbar can accept, and many 100-amp and even some 200-amp panels have no headroom for a solar breaker. We check this at the estimate so it appears in the original scope rather than as a change order, and we do the panel work ourselves.
Do I have to remove my solar panels to replace my roof? Yes. We remove the array and racking, store the equipment, return after the roof is complete, reinstall with new flashings and proper penetrations, and recommission the system. We schedule around your roofer.
Can my electric vehicle power my house during an outage? If your vehicle and charger both support bidirectional charging, yes, with the appropriate transfer equipment installed. An electric vehicle battery holds several times the energy of a typical home battery, which makes this genuinely useful during the multi-day shutoffs this region sees.
I have an older solar system. Will expanding it affect my net metering status? Possibly, and it is worth checking carefully. Customers on legacy net metering tariffs are generally grandfathered for a defined period, and modifications can affect that. We evaluate this before quoting an expansion.
Will you review a solar proposal I received from another company? Yes. We are not neutral, since we install solar, but we would rather tell you honestly that a project does not fit your roof or your usage than watch you sign something that does not.
